14 June 2005
Continuing its support of local screenings of Buddhist cinema, the IBFF will co-present the Red Vic Movie House’s Shake Your Buddha series of films in San Francisco, June 26–July 2.
Dean Sluyter, author of Cinema Nirvana—Enlightenment Lessons From the Movies, will introduce and discuss Memento, an enigmatic thriller by Christopher Nolan, and Bob Sharf, UC Berkeley professor of Buddhist studies, will be on hand to discuss the screening of Richard Linklater’s animated feature Waking Life. Gaetano Kazuo Maida from the IBFF will introduce the evening screenings of Compassion In Exile, a film by Mickey Lemle about the Dalai Lama, and Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man, a dreamy western with a Neil Young soundtrack, starring Johnny Depp, that screened at the recent 2005 IBFF. A new print of Conrad Rook’s classic film of Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha rounds out the program.
